One of my favorite books in the Old Testament is the book of Nehemiah. In this book we see Nehemiah and the Jews who lived in Jerusalem battle against all odds and rebuild the wall surrounding Jerusalem. There was great opposition from those who hated the people of God, but through God’s help, hard work, and much perseverance, the wall surrounding Jerusalem was rebuilt in fifty-two days.
This account from the Old Testament is similar to what we face today as believers. God has provided His church as a place of protection and safety. Through our disobedience the walls have been broken down, but God has a plan to restore the spiritual city of God (His Church) if we will seek Him for His plan to rebuild what has been destroyed.
The walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt in record time because God’s favor was with them. There is another key to their success found in Nehemiah 4:6, “for the people had a mind to work.” It took a lot of hard work, and everyone working together to see God’s plan come to fruition. Nehemiah 3 lists the names of all the families that worked on rebuilding the wall that was in front of their house. Today there are Bible believing churches all around our city with a heart to rebuild in front of “their house” what the enemy has destroyed. With everyone working together towards the same goal, I believe we can also see the Plan of God come to fruition in our lives and in our city.
The restoring of Jerusalem took God’s favor, humility of leaders, wisdom to not get distracted from the task at hand, and the people of God to have a mind to work. I believe God is working today to restore our lives and His Church to be a glorious Church. Come on, we are builders! If you agree, say "Amen."
