Today we will look at various uses of the word “stand” in the New Testament. Romans 14:4 says “God is able to make us stand”. This use of the word “stand” carries the meaning of being accepted by God and to be in good standing with God. So, by God’s grace we can stand before him, accepted by Him and in good standing with Him because of what Jesus accomplished on Calvary. By accepting the lordship of Jesus in my life, I am accepting God’s forgiveness for all of my sins. God has made me able to stand.
The word “stand” also appears in scripture coupled with the word “fast”. Philippians 4:1 says “stand fast in the Lord“, and Galatians 5:1 says “stand fast in the liberty” of Christ. This use of the word “stand” denotes being committed, unwavering, and steadfast. We are to stand “for” what God has done in our lives, and what He has provided for us. There are many opportunities in the life of a believer to “stand for” the things of God. To affirm that God’s way is the way I want to life my life. To stand.
Another reference to “stand” in the bible is found in Ephesians 6:11. This passage tells the believer to “stand against” the wiles or schemes of the devil. We are not to allow the devils schemes to influence us towards evil. The next verse says our battle is not against flesh and blood. Your problem is not other people. This is a spiritual battle fought with spiritual weapons. We need the armor of God to be able to stand. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Stand against evil. Stand against the powers of darkness. Verse 13-14 says ‘having done all to stand, stand therefore’. When you’ve done all you know to do, keep on standing. Don’t give up, don’t waver, keep trusting in God and His faithfulness, because has made us able to stand.
